Lock Picking - Introduction

Locking picking is generally considered to be a gray area for many people. The topic harbors mixed interest. While lock picking is very useful, if you tell someone you know how to pick locks, most notions automatically are negative about *why* you know how to pick locks. We’re here to teach you how anyway.

Ethics

While lock picking itself can be unethical if used in properly, so can driving your car. If I ran over people with my car, I’d be using my knowledge of driving and my tools(my car) in an unethical manner, yet you don’t see people questioning you if you say you’re able to drive a car. Lock picking needs to be viewed in the same manner. Just because you have knowledge of a particular subject doesn’t mean you’re going to use in bad ways. First you need to convince yourself, then it’ll be easier to explain and convince others.

Types of Locks

There are two main types of locks that everyone is generally familiar with. Those are:

Pin Tumbler Lock

Pin tumbler locks are used every where you go. The apartment, townhouse, house, etc that you’re living in most likely uses pin locks. Rarely will any building use anything else. If so, it’s usually a company, because they want higher security. However, almost any time a normal key is involved(not one of those card access keys), then the lock is just a standard pin lock. The exception to this is things like vehicles. Vehicles often have special keys that even though pins may be one of the things in use, there are other preventive measures going on that you don’t see.

Combination Lock

Most people are familiar with these types of locks because of HighSchool. They are the combination locks people often use on their locks to make sure others don’t get into locker and touch their stuff. Combination locks are often used for locking other items such as a gate, a shed, etc. These locks have a pad on them that you turn, select the right numbers in the right order, and the lock opens on up. The most common brand seen and used is the MasterLock Combination lock.
